Useful shortcuts

Easily drag-and-drop objects from Objective ECM to other browser windows / tabs, other areas within Objective ECM (like your My home or Handy folders) or other applications. All objects can be dragged-and-dropped depending on:

  • your permissions and privileges
  • the object type, and
  • if it is appropriate to being dropped into the destination location.

When you are dragging a selected object, a shadow object type icon, along with the number of selected objects that are being dragged, displays as you move your cursor to the new location. The following example shows 2 objects being dragged from the Content pane and dropped into the Handy folder.

Example of object drag-and-drop

You are able populate single or multi-value fields by dragging-and-dropping:

  • search / query results

  • objects from the Content pane or Navigation pane

  • metadata available in object cards or Details pages.

If a destination application supports HTML formatted content (such as Microsoft Word), then when you drag-and-drop an object into it from Objective ECM IQ, the object link displays as hyperlinked text.

The drag icon includes an unavailable icon, Unavailable icon for drag-and-drop, while you are dragging an object over a location that does not allow a drop action. Messages will let you know if there are any issues with an object being dragged-and-dropped into a location.

The basic action for dragging-and-dropping is considered a move. Copy and create alias are secondary actions that can be selected from the Move objects dialog box when dragging-and-dropping objects.

An error occurs if you do not have the appropriate privileges or permissions to move, copy or create an alias of the objects in the target location.

Move an object

Drag-and-drop objects from the Navigation pane or Content pane to:

  • another location in the Navigation pane
  • to the Content pane
  • other applications that support HTML formatted content.

Select Move to confirm.

You can choose another action or cancel from the Move objects dialog box.

Create an alias

Drag-and-drop objects from the Navigation pane or Content pane to:

  • another location in the Navigation pane
  • to the Content pane
  • other applications that support HTML formatted content.

Select Alias to confirm.

You can choose another action or cancel from the Move objects dialog box.

Copy an object

Drag-and-drop objects from the Navigation pane or Content pane to:

  • another location in the Navigation pane
  • to the Content pane
  • other applications that support HTML formatted content.

Select Copy to confirm.

You can choose another action or cancel from the Move objects dialog box.

Release a document from editing

Drag a document that you have finished editing and saved to your local drive and drop it onto the document’s card in the Content pane or on the Summary section of its Details page. Complete the Release from edit dialog box details.

Upload a new document version

Drag a new document version from your local drive and drop it onto the document's card in the Content pane or on the Summary section of its Details page. Complete the Upload new version dialog box details.

Drag a new document from your local drive and drop it into any container on the Content pane, Navigation pane, My home or Handy on the menu bar to open the Upload blade and complete the details.

Populate a field

When you drag-and-drop an object into a field, the object value is assigned to the field.

Change a selected container

When you wish to change the selected container for an action, e.g., uploading a new document, drag-and-drop another container into the Container field of an open blade or dialog box.

Copy an object ID

Hover your mouse cursor over an object ID listed in any page of Objective ECM to display Example of copying an object ID.

Click your mouse to copy the object ID to your clipboard so that it can be pasted where needed.

Tip:  If you are dragging-and-dropping objects within Objective ECM, tick the checkbox adjacent to each object in the Content pane so you know which objects you are dragging-and-dropping.

  • Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer do not support all the functionality of HTML5, so there will be some differences in how drag-and-drop behaves using these browsers. For instance, object links display as text and not hyperlinks and you won’t get a shadow icon as the selected object is being dragged.
  • You can’t drag-and-drop an object by its name if you are using Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer.
  • You can’t drag-and-drop an object by its icon into Microsoft Outlook.
  • It is not possible to use drag-and-drop to create or copy an alias when using Objective ECM in Safari.
  • If you are working in Microsoft Edge and you drag-and-drop text that is hyperlinked in Objective ECM into a field, Microsoft Edge will create a URL of the hyperlinked text rather than just including the text. For example, this will happen if you attempt to drag a profile link into a user input field or a folder link from the breadcrumbs into a folder input field. You can work around this issue by dragging the object title from its Details page or dragging-and-dropping an object card into the input field.
