Linked objects

Links indicate a relationship or dependency between two or more Objective objects. Create links between objects to imply a connection or relationship. Depending on how Objective ECM has been configured, some links may be automatically create. For example, when you add an email message to Objective ECM, any attachments are automatically added as separate, but linked objects.

Objective ECM uses the standard linking functionality within Microsoft Office:

  • identifies links in the document while saving new documents to Objective ECM or releasing an existing document from editing and adds the links as well as the document as a new object or an already existing one in Objective ECM.
  • on opening or editing a document, the existing links are automatically downloaded to your Objective Director cache.

Tip:  If the object linking capability is not available in Microsoft Office, then the functionality will not work. If you set up the same linking steps outside of Objective ECM and the expected use case does not work, then object linking will not work when Objective ECM linking is incorporated.

Linked objects are easily identified by an icon next to the object icon. Hovering your cursor over the icon displays the number of linked objects as shown in the example:

An internet link is identified by an Internet link icon icon.

Note:  Working with linked documents in Objective ECM requires the latest compatible version of Objective Director.
